I have little doubt that the carbon tax will be used to bring in a police state. The Australian Federal Police & other agencies will enforce the “carbon laws” in a new police state.

ABC Midday Report 29/July/2011

The Australian reports:

The Australian Federal Police Association president Jim Torr said there was little doubt the AFP would be required to play a role in policing the scheme.
“Tax evasion is one of the big things the AFP works on,”

The Daily Telegraph reports:

HUNDREDS of “carbon cops” will police compliance with the carbon tax and will have the power to inspect premises, take companies to court and impose financial penalties.

Perth Now reports:

Treasurer Wayne Swan said the ACCC would use “tough new powers to crack down on misleading claims about price increases”. It got the powers in legislation in January to police carbon tax-related price rises.

Six new government agencies and 20 new programs will also be created to oversee the carbon tax.

At least 200 new public servants will be hired by the new Clean Energy Regulator to police the new scheme and penalise businesses that evade the carbon tax.

The Australian Reports:

The exposure draft of the legislation gives sweeping powers to the Clean Energy Regulator, which will police the scheme, and the climate change minister will have the power to demand information from corporations covered by the scheme.

Fraud or attempts to subvert the scheme can be punished by up to 10 years in jail or fines of $1.1 million for corporations.

Inspectors working for the regulator will be able to obtain warrants to search premises of companies covered by the act and search or examine any activity on site as well as copy documents.

The regulator will have the authority to demand information from company officers even if it could incriminate them.

The enforcement provisions will be further strengthened by an extra $12.8m over four years for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
